Aloha!

My name is Christina Redmond and I’m a 27 year-old amateur photographer with a B.S in Marine Biology and a deep passion for Marine Wildlife Conservation, Environmental Sustainability, and Education. My hobbies include photography, ocean-based activities (diving, swimming, surfing, etc.), loud-music roadtrips, spending quality time with family/friends and enjoying the simple things in life.

Background

I was fortunate enough to be born and raised just a half an hour from the beautiful Northern California coastline. Growing up in the Bay Area (Marin County) gave me the opportunity to explore some of the most iconic and photographed locations in the world, which lead to an interest in photography, ocean research, and environmental sustainability. I’m incredibly grateful for those humble beginnings and dedicate this website to my loving and supportive parents who gave me this wonderful world to explore and the continuous encouragement to do so.

I moved to Oahu, Hawai'i to study Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii in 2011 and have fell in love with this state ever since. I came to Oahu not knowing much about the area, culture, or school I was attending, but had an open mind, nonetheless. During my undergraduate studies, I took four upper level Hawaiian culture/religion classes, in lieu of a language requirement, and it was honestly one of the best decisions I've made while living here. It allowed me to understand the culture-rich history of the Native Hawaiians, their connection to the ocean, and how to live with Aloha. My love and connection to Hawaii has come from a greater appreciation for the ocean, environment, and the local community members. Hawaii has given me so much to be thankful for and has had a great influence on my development as a photographer, but more importantly, as a person.

Photography

My interest in photography started in high school when my parents gave me a Sony point and shoot camera for Christmas (which I broke shortly after). The next camera I tried was my mom's old Olympus film camera. I’ve only taken two photography classes (both film) where I spent a majority of the time worrying about messing up prints in a dark room. While I gained some great perspective from my teachers and peers, I really didn’t take much away from those classes about cameras or photography.

Up until about a year ago, I was only taking photographs with my iPhone and GoPro 3+ (yes, an incredibly outdated GoPro). I now shoot with a (slightly) more professional camera, Nikon D3400, and have been teaching myself how to use it, along with Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and other editing software. While learning new technology and editing software has become a hobby of mine, I prefer my professional photography be shared with little edits or modifications. The photographs shared on my website are intended to reveal the beauty, power, and love that I have for the natural world that surrounds me. My only hope is that my photography will offer an original perspective to the familiar, but largely undiscovered, world we live in, as well as inspire marine and environmental conservation, sustainability, and appreciation.
